BOOKING AND PAYMENT

What happens after I pay my deposit online?

Immediately you will receive a booking confirmation via email which will list both your HAKA Tour and any other items such as activities, nights’ accommodation and so on. Within 72 hours, you will also receive a welcome email from your Haka Tour Advisor who will be your sole point of contact and a valuable information resource for any queries you may have up until the day you embark on your trip! He or she will give you their personal email address so that you have a direct communication line to them. This means no delays, no cheesy telephone music and an advisor who knows your requirements inside and out.

At about four weeks prior to departure, we will send you a short questionnaire about yourself which we will then hand to your tour guide in preparation for your trip!

At three weeks (1 week for a Snow Tour) prior to departure, you will then receive your final tour documentation via email. This will include information about meeting times and locations, your tour guide, extra nights’ accommodation vouchers and how to prepare for your tour!

I’m having difficulties booking online.

Give us a call on +64 3 980 4252 and we can book you on over the phone.

How do I pay my balance off?

If you booked online, you can log back into your account through our Passenger Login area, and pay off your balance by making as many separate payments as you wish. Your due date will be written on your Welcome Letter that you received from your Tour Advisor upon placing your deposit. We accept Visa or Mastercard.

If you booked over the phone, you won’t have access to your online account and will therefore have to give us another call to pay the rest off.

Can I purchase the tour with flights?

Due to the variable request of flight requirements we receive, we no longer offer flight-based packages. However, we can point you in the right direction to find the best deals on the market.

I have been on an adventure tour and I want to claim my discount for one of the Snow Tours. How do I do this?

Simply send us an email and we will send you an online discount coupon to claim your 10% discount! Easy as that!

TOUR PREPARATION

What should I bring with me?

Check out our Tour Preparation page
here.

Do I need a visa to visit New Zealand?

If you are a citizen of a country that has a visa waiver agreement with New Zealand, you will not need to apply for a visa to visit the country for three months or less. At the moment there are over 50 countries that don’t require visas to visit New Zealand. Check out www.immigration.govt.nz for more details.

However, you do need a passport that is valid for three months after you intend to leave the country, proof that you plan to leave (i.e. a return ticket), and sufficient money to stay (around $1,000 NZD per month per person).

Do I need any vaccinations?

No vaccinations are required for visiting New Zealand.

WHILST ON TOUR

What is your typical group size and age?

Generally a group will be made up of 8-12 people, although we do run with lower numbers at times. Ages can range from 18-40 but normally average out at late 20s. There are of course the occasional exception – we are firm believers that attitude is more important than age!

About 70% of our tour members are solo travellers.

Do you cater for children?

No. Because of the nature of our tours, we are solely aimed at the over 17s. Whilst we are very flexible and endeavour to cater for everyone's needs as much as possible, we would recommend looking elsewhere if travelling with a young family.

The only exception in this case would be if you are looking to book a private tour, in which case we are happy to provide you with a quote for all ages.

What will the accommodation be like? How many people choose to upgrade to a private room?

The accommodation on tour is based in a variety of hostels, motels and adventure lodges. All are continuously reviewed by our staff and if we feel that a particular place isn’t up to scratch, we will find somewhere else. We always endeavour to use Qualmark endorsed accommodation providers which means is a stamp of approval for quality and health and safety by the New Zealand tourism regulating body.

About 10-20% of people choose to upgrade – it is quite difficult to advise customers on as it is obviously a personal decision that we cannot make for you! If you do upgrade, we can guarantee an ensuite bathroom 90% of the time.

All places have full kitchen, lounge, TV and internet facilities, and bedding comes provided.

What do I need to budget for apart from the tour and any additional activities?

Not too much! We suggest $30-50 NZD for lunch and dinner per day. Some activity operators will offer you photo and/or DVD packages and prices for these will vary from $20-100 NZD. Other than this, take into consideration souvenirs, nights out (if you are the type!), and the occasional low cost entrance fee.

We don’t ask for any LTP (local tour payment) or other such hidden costs.

What happens about lunch and dinner?

Lunch is generally whilst you are out and about, and so your tour guide will find the group somewhere reasonable e.g. cafe/bakery. Every place we stay at has full kitchen facilities and so you are able to cook for yourselves in the evening if you want to... or your guide will make suggestions for eating out! Usually we find the group will stick together.

What is included in the basic tour price?

  • Accommodation
  • Transport
  • Services of an experienced and passionate tour manager
  • Breakfast every day
  • Ferry crossings if applicable
  • Sightseeing, admission fees and activities as shown under “What’s Included” for each tour
  • For Snow Tours – see details for each of our 3, 4 and 7 day NZ Snow Tours

What is NOT included in the basic tour price?
  • Flights(!) and airport transfers
  • Accommodation before or after your Haka Tour (including on the final day)
  • Lunch and dinners (However, lunch is included in many of the day-long activities and every place that we stay in allows you to self-cater.)
  • Optional activities and any of our Extreme Activity Packs
  • Personal expense money, personal insurance, medical fees and airport departure taxes. For insurance, we recommend Down Under Insurance – great for adventure activities.
  • For Snow Tours – see details for each of our 3, 4 and 7 day NZ Snow Tours

How many additional activities would you recommend booking? What are the best ones?

There is no rule to this – some people will choose heaps, others will be content with the tour itself and the free or low cost activities that your tour guide will find for you along the road. The maximum amount of activities anyone should be would be 2 to every location. If it is possible to fit any more in, bear in mind that activities can still be booked whilst on tour (just at a slightly more expensive price than online).

Everyone has their own favourites, but in general we find that these are some of the most popular:

  • Skydiving (anywhere)
  • White-Water Rafting – Rotorua
  • Dolphin Swimming – Kaikoura
  • Half Day Glacier Trek – Franz Josef
  • Nevis Bungy
  • Canyoning - Auckland
  • Black Water Rafting - Waitomo
