Winter in NZ
New Zealand is a beautiful place all year round and we are going to prove it! We will showcase a couple of our top picks during the winter season:
Queenstown
With temperatures from -2 degrees to 8 degrees in Winter (June-August), Queenstown definitely offers the change to experience genuine winter weather! With the snow-capped mountains, it’s also one of the most beautiful places to explore during the winter season.
Queenstown is known for its ski fields: Coronet Peak (the oldest and most developed ski area in the South Island) and The Remarkables.. The ski fields offer good variety for all skill levels so In additional to skiing, adventure-capital Queenstown also offers plenty of adrenaline activities such as sky diving, bungee jumping or jet-boating.
For those looking for a little less pace Queenstown offers the famous Onsen Hot Pools. A perfect way to unwind and enjoy the views in Queenstown in true luxury...
Wanaka
Aclose neighbour of Queenstown, Wanaka also offers great skiing mountains – Cardrona and Treble Cone. If you were to choose one of our Adventure Tours in the winter months, you’ll still have the opportunity to add on some fabulous optional activities such as visiting Mou Waho Island or E-biking around Lake Wanaka.
And for when you are done with the snow, there are plenty of apres-ski places where you can enjoy your beverage of choice! The Cardona Pub is a firm favourite all year round!
Christchurch
Christchurch also offers a greatski opportunity for the ski lovers at the awesome Mt Hutt. But for the people who are looking for other activities during the winter, Christchurch offers quite a bit – you can enjoy an afternoon at Tekapo Springs, visit the Orana Wildlife park, catch the Tranz Alpine train from Christchurch to Greymouth and enjoy the beautiful scenery; or warm up at the Hanmer Springs.
Bay of Islands
Aka the winterless north! If you want to escape the winter months a little, Bay of Islands is the place to go. With beautiful walking trails, the Haruru Falls, the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and Tane Mahuta (Lord of the forest) there is plenty to see and do during the winter period!
Rotorua
For people that do not like the really cold weather or the snow, Rotorua is the place to visit during the winter months. With it having a higher average temperature than the South Island, it creates a more comfortable place to stay. Next to that, it offers great activities, of which some even keep you warm (:D!).
You can for example enjoy your day at the Polynesian Spa, walk around Blue Lake, go for a mountain bike through the forest, eat all the foods at Eat Street or take a tour through the native forest.
All in all there are plenty of things to do during the winter months in New Zealand. So what are you waiting for?
