Day 11: Hokitika to Fox Glacier

This morning you have the opportunity to explore Hokitika a little more. Here there are many galleries specialising in jewellery and art made from pounamu, or greenstone. This type of stone is only found on the west coast of the South Island and is one of the great taonga (treasures) of the Māori. Some galleries even offer courses where you can carve your very own pounamu. We then continue along the West Coast and reach the Southern Alps. The Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers are among the few on earth whose terminal faces reach down to the rainforest, less than 300 meters above sea level. You can take a scenic helicopter flight here to witness the fascinating glacial world and Mount Cook from a bird’s eye view (optional). We end the day with dinner together.
