Day 3: Waitomo to Rotorua

Now’s your chance to go caving in a place with twinkling glow worms on the ceiling.

Daredevils can abseil 100 metres into the caverns on an epic 4-hour caving adventure. Or float along on an underground river on an optional Black Water Rafting adventure (where you float down an underground river on a tire inner tube) as the glow worms light your way. There are also excellent guided walking tours of the caves available if heights or wet feet aren’t your thing.

Later this afternoon we head to Rotorua – New Zealand's most dynamic geothermal area. Rotorua is home to neon blue and red lakes, steaming rivers and geysers galore. Along with the amazing sights, you'll probably/definitely notice a distinctive, sulphuric smell while you're in Rotorua. Don't worry though, within a few hours of being in the city, you probably won't notice it – much!

In the afternoon we'll visit Te Puia – a Māori culture and arts centre where we will explore Whakarewarewa geothermal valley, visit New Zealand’s native kiwi birds, see the impressive (and very punctual) Pohutu Geyser, as well as get an insight into learn about Māori history and culture.
