Coromandel Tour from Auckland
With more than 400 kilometres of dazzling white sand beaches lapped by clear, sparkling waters, it’s little wonder that the Coromandel is a favourite holiday destination for Kiwis. Especially in summer when the brilliant red flowers of the pohutukawa trees decorate the coastline. The region’s catchphrase is ‘good for your soul’, and when you arrive here on a Haka tour from Auckland, you’ll feel like kicking off your footwear and banishing all your cares away.
It's All About the Beaches
Densely covered in lush rainforest, the mountainous interior of the peninsula is great for avid hikers, but the beaches are definitely the main drawcard. On our North Island tours we’ll take you to the Coromandel’s two most intriguing highlights: Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove. Māori have lived around here for over 800 years, and you’ll have a chance to learn some Māori traditions.
HOT WATER BEACH
This is one of those Kiwi experiences our guides love to take our guests to: a beach where you can dig in the sand to create your own bath tub which will be filled up with geothermally-heated mineral water that you can soak in as you watch the waves of the Pacific Ocean just metres away. Of course, you need to get the time and the place just right – two hours either side of low tide and near the rocks at the southern end of the beach is when and where the area of sand with hot water underneath is exposed. Dig the hole with your tour mates and then relax in the warm water.
CATHEDRAL COVE
One of the true jewels of the Coromandel is Te Whanganui-A-Hei (Cathedral Cove) Marine Reserve which is only accessible by foot, kayak or boat. Cathedral Cove compared to Auckland is a completely different world. The archway in the middle of the cove is reminiscent of a cathedral’s arch – hence its name. If you’ve seen the movie version of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, you may recognise the arched cave and beach as the entrance to Narnia.
To fully appreciate this exceptional area, you can take a guided kayak tour of the protected marine reserve where you’ll learn about the numerous small islands and island groups that lie offshore and may see dolphins amidst the abundance of marine life found within the clear blue waters. It truly is a magical place to be! On a reverse North Island or full New Zealand tour make one of your last activities a Cathedral Cove tour! You will not regret it!
