Haast Pass
This 140km route from Wanaka to the West Coast passes through some spectacular and breathtaking scenery. Traditionally, this trail was commonly used by Māori travelling west in quest of pounamu (greenstone or jade). The Hawea and Wanaka Glaciers carved out the basins that Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka fill today.

Give yourself plenty of time to cross Haast Pass and get to the coast.
A variety of shorter hikes start near the edge of the roadway surprising you with lush rainforests and thundering waterfalls. Favorite excursions include walks to Roaring Billy, Fantail Falls, Thunder Creek Waterfall, and the Blue Pools. Several tourists stop at the Gates of Haast gorge to take pictures of the raging river as it crashes over the river stones.
